As Newcastle considers a new bid, The Mail claims that Paul Mitchell was at the Stadium of Light on Saturday for a “secret trip” to study Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

According to reports this morning, the club is eager to recruit the 21-year-old on a loan-to-buy agreement after their previous proposal of £16 million was rejected in June. The Clarets were reportedly wanting approximately £20 million.

Mitchell was in the stands to reassess Trafford, who started as Burnley fell 1-0 to Sunderland over the weekend, according to Craig Hope of The Mail.

The England U21 international is said to have been “always intended to revisit a deal” by Newcastle, and the player himself thinks a move to St James’ Park might happen before Friday’s deadline.

Although personal terms are not expected to be a problem, we will need to work out a deal with Burnley and let go of Martin Dubravka and/or Odysseas Vlachodimos, the Greek goalkeeper who was only brought in via a PSR trade involving Elliot Anderson, sparing us from a 10-point deduction.

In isolation, Trafford would be a wise addition, but with five goalkeepers currently in our roster, let’s hope any deal for the youthful stopper doesn’t cut into the money needed to buy a right winger and center defender!
