Mamelodi Sundowns reveal their new song, Manqoba Mngqithi!
Mngqithi had been serving as the assistant coach to Rulani Mokwena at Sundowns, before the latter departed for Wydad Casablanca.
That departure saw a reshuffle that saw Mngqithi brought back in charge, albeit in a temporary capacity. Sundowns then also announced the reappointment of former senior coach Steve Komphela. The former Golden Arrows and Moroka Swallows coach will serve in the same capacity upon his return. It is believed that the former is currently heading the teams preparations in Austria, although he is yet to sign a new contract.
Recently though, his agent Mike Makaab spoke about Mngqithi’s new deal at Sundowns being in a unique role.
“It’s a different position that I can’t discuss, it’s not an assistant, but not a head coach, it’s something pretty different but on the coaching side, which I think is unique in South African football but not unique to European football. I am confident that during the course of this week we will finalise a deal for Manqoba (Mngqithi),” said Makaab earlier this month.
Now having said that, the latest sentiments from Makaab seem to contradict the previous statement. Speaking to Soccer-Laduma, the agent confirmed he will wrap everything up with Sundowns this week. Furthermore, he confirms Mngqithi will be their new head coach!
“He has not signed a contract yet, but we will finalise everything this week, as head coach. “I am still negotiating, but it won’t be a short-term contract.” Said Makaab about Mngqithi’s new Sundowns deal.
This represents an interesting U-turn as it looked as if Mngqithi was about to be pushed up to a more senior role. But with the club already hard at work in Austria under him, perhaps the signs were already there.
